Prevention

The best way to prevent serious illness from COVID-19 is to receive all recommended doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. While the virus can spread among vaccinated people, people who haven't received their recommended follow-up doses are especially at risk for severe illness, hospitalization, and death. Getting all recommended doses of the COVID-19 vaccines provides you with the highest level of protection.

According to CDC’s recommendation, certain people may benefit from additional doses of COVID-19 vaccine. Depending on which vaccine you originally got and whether or not you are immunocompromised, this follow-up dose may be your third, fourth, or fifth dose. People who may benefit most from another dose are people who are at higher risk because of their age, medical conditions, or living or working situations. These risk factors make it more likely that you will get very sick or need to be hospitalized from COVID-19. Talking with a health care provider can help you learn more about whether it’s best for you to get another dose.

Follow-up doses are available at any vaccine provider. No ID, insurance, or proof of medical history is required. All doses of the vaccine are free.

Treatment

Colorado encourages those who test positive for COVID-19 and are at high risk of getting sick from COVID-19 to seek treatment to help them recover. It’s important that people seek treatment within a few days of testing positive. There are two main types of treatments: monoclonal antibody therapy and antivirals. If Coloradans are immunocompromised or can’t get vaccinated, they may be able to take a preventive medicine called Evusheld to keep from getting sick. Evusheld is not a treatment for people who are already infected with COVID-19. People should talk with their doctor or health care provider as soon as they can to ask about treatment. If they do not have a health care provider, they can find a place to get treatment using the ASPR COVID-19 Therapeutics Locator or CDPHE’s therapeutics provider map. A list of providers and pharmacies with treatments can also be found on CDPHE's Treatments page.

Coloradans can also use the new federal Test to Treat program to seek antiviral treatment. This is an all in one location where people can get tested for COVID-19, get a prescription for treatment from a health care provider (if appropriate), and have their prescription filled all at one location (if they are positive and treatments are appropriate). See our Test To Treat toolkit for more information.
