As of March 2022, Coloradans can use the new federal Test to Treat program to seek antiviral treatment for COVID-19. In this program, people can get tested for COVID-19, get a prescription for treatment from a health care provider (if appropriate) and have their prescription filled. People who receive COVID-19 test results through at-home tests or another testing site can also use a Test to Treat location to receive a prescription for oral antivirals.

There are two different types of oral antivirals available through the Test to Treat program.

  • Paxlovid is a pill for people who have mild or moderate COVID-19 symptoms and are at high risk of getting very sick. People aged 12 years or older who weigh at least 40 kilograms (about 88 pounds) can take Paxlovid.
  • Molnupiravir (Lagevrio) is a pill for people who have tested positive for COVID-19, are at high risk of getting very sick, and cannot receive other COVID-19 treatments. Adults aged 18 years and older can take molnupiravir.
  • A health care provider can determine if either of these medications is appropriate for you.

Right now, oral antivirals (Paxlovid and molnupiravir) are authorized for people who:

  • Are aged 12 years and older for Pfizer’s Paxlovid or aged 18 years and older for Merck’s Lagevrio (molnupiravir), and
  • Have tested positive for COVID-19, and
  • Have had symptoms for less than five days, and
  • Are at high risk of becoming seriously ill. People at at high risk of becoming seriously ill from COVID-19 include:
    • People who are aged 65 years and older.
    • People who are obese or overweight. This includes adults with a BMI of 25 or more. It also includes children under age 18 years old whose providers determine they meet the criteria.
    • Pregnant people (for Paxlovid only).
    • People with underlying medical conditions.

Health insurance is not required to receive treatment at a Test to Treat location. Oral antivirals are free. However, there may be other costs associated with this visit, like administration or appointment fees. Coloradans with health insurance may use it to cover these costs.  Coloradans without insurance should apply for Health First Colorado (Colorado's Medicaid program). Health First Colorado covers COVID-19 testing and treatments for those who qualify. Coloradans who do not have health insurance should contact the health care provider about any payment options they may have.

We encourage Coloradans to visit a Test to Treat location if they are experiencing any mild symptoms. These locations are an all-in-one stop to get COVID-19 treatment.
