Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are authorized by the FDA for people aged 6 months and older. Parents and guardians should make a plan to get their children vaccinated. Vaccination is the best way to protect children from COVID-19. Getting a COVID-19 vaccine can help your child stay healthy and protect your loved ones and community.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also approved a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine for children aged 5 through 11 years. Children 5 through 11 years old should get their third dose at least five months after their second dose. It takes two weeks after getting a third dose to build maximum protection. Some immunocompromised children may need four doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Parents and guardians can find out how many doses their child will need for the highest level of protection with our COVID-19 vaccine dose calculator.

COVID-19 vaccines are free. You do not need ID or insurance for you or your child to get vaccinated. To find a pediatric vaccine provider, visit our vaccine finder page or call 1-877-CO VAX CO (1-877-268-2926). The vaccine hotline is available in multiple languages.

Vaccination is the most effective tool we have against COVID-19 and its variants.

On June 18, 2022, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officially recommended the use of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 6months through 4 years and the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 6 months through 5years. This announcement came after the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices unanimously recommended use of the both vaccines in this younger population, and following FDA’s amendment of the emergency use authorization for both vaccines.

CDC also recommends children aged 5 years and older get a third dose when they are due for one. Clinical trials showed that the vaccines are safe and effective in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 in children 6 months and older. Most importantly, COVID-19 vaccines work well to prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death among children. While children are less likely to get seriously sick or die from COVID-19 than adults, they are still at risk and can spread the virus to others. Getting vaccinated means they can enjoy summer activities and decrease the risk of spreading COVID-19.

Ensure your child has a positive vaccine experience by talking with your child’s health care provider. You can also learn more about the COVID-19 vaccines and find a provider offering the vaccines at covid19.colorado.gov/kids-vaccines.
